Are you suffering from social anxiety? You
may be surprised at what causes it. If you are afraid to go meet people
in person then this article may help.
Your Social Brain
Believe it or not there's a part of the brain that's dedicated to human contact. When you're with another person this part of your brain kicks in. Scientists call this "Mirror Neurons."
These mirror neurons fire when we're with others. It allows us to closely observe the people around us while at the same time being aware that we are being observed.
a Cruel Experiment
Years ago researchers did an experiment with chimpanzees. There were several groups of chimpanzees. Each group had their own large cage.
There were ropes hanging from the ceiling. When one of the chimpanzee's ropes tugged on a rope he or she would get feed.
These were the white coloured ropes. There was one larger blue rope. When a chimpanzee tugged that one he or she would get extra goodies. They all soon realised the significance of the blue rope.
One day the researchers decided to do something different. When the blue rope was pulled they made it appear as if that lead to pain for another chimpanzee in their cage.
The first time they tried this they were shocked at what happened next.
None of the other chimpanzees ever touched the blue rope again. Not only that, but none of the other chimpanzees in the other cages went near the blue rope again.
That's the power of mirror neurons.
Some of us have more highly developed mirror neurons than others. And some of us have had them "turned off" by a chemical.
What Oxytocin Does
Oxytocin levels build up inside of you and you may never know. Older women usually have too much Oxytocin because they have too high a level of oestrogen. These women often have less contact with their mothers, family and friends. They also can view their husbands as unsupportive or unaffectionate and stop opening up to them.
Perhaps this is the start of social phobia.
It's surprising how things outside of our awareness can cause anxiety symptoms. Left untreated this anxiety builds and another part of the brain begins to take control.
The Reptilian Brain
You've probably heard of the "fight or flight" response. This is your reptilian brain trying to protect you and keep you alive from predators. If it thinks you are going to be harmed in any way it will cause you to run away, freeze in place, or, as a last resort, fight.
And that's what happens with people who suffer with social anxiety. Or if you like, a fear of people.
What's the cure?
This I know you'll find hard to believe. It astonished me when I found out about it recently. You increase your face to face contact with people.
Yes, that's the last thing you want to hear, however, stay with me here. People contact actually reduces your stress levels. And I'm talking almost immediately. The best part is your Oxytocin levels begin going down. Next your levels of Cortisol will go down which means some people can actually lose weight around their middle as a result.
The Vagus Nerve
This is the delicate nerve that connects the brain and body. By activating this nerve through social contact you eliminate anxiety quickly and easily.
And the best way to do this is to tap on certain points on your body in a certain way. This wipes away anxiety and social phobia so you enjoy being with people again.
These points are:
• Under the eye close to the nose
• The side of the side near where your eye ends
• The collar bone
• Under your arm
• Under the nose
• And you rub a spot clockwise slightly under your collar bone
However you must do this in the right sequence or it will have no effect.
This is known as Thought Field Therapy or TFT.
Most books on TFT are very complicated and use a whole gamut of sequences. You may find that intimidating even though they work.
I don't know about you but I like simple, easy and quick.
Especially for anyone who suffers from social phobia, because now you know how valuable being with people is.
And I'm sure you're going to want to know more about this simple sequence.
You won't believe how effective it is until you try it yourself.
