The effect that anger and depression has on one's entire being both physically and mentally should not be taken lightly. First let's look at anger and some of its causes and symptoms to see clearly how we should try to control anger. There are many contributing factors that cause anger to manifest itself; they can range from unjustified frustration, unfair treatment, an insult, an attack on our self-esteem, or personal criticism.
The effects that anger and depression can have on us no matter what the cause can be devastating. For instance stress and pressure can cause respiratory problems, rage can upset thinking processes and the after effects can lead to periods of extreme mental depression, yes there is a correlation between anger and depression. Notice some of the physical effects anger can cause internally, rise in blood pressure, respiratory trouble liver upsets change in the secretion of gall the pancreas can also be negatively affected, arterial changes. Uncontrolled anger and rage as strong as these emotions are, have been listed by physicians as contributing to, aggravating, or even causing such ailments as asthma, eye afflictions, skin diseases, hives, ulcers, and dental and digestive troubles. Rage and fury can upset thinking processes so that one cannot form logical conclusions or pass sound judgment. The aftermath of a fit of rage is often a period of extreme mental depression, so once again the relationship between anger and depression cannot be overlooked.
What are some positive steps that we can take to control anger? The suggestions are many; I found these few to be interesting and simple to apply.
To reduce anger, slow down and relax. Try to avoid saying the first thing that comes to mind.
— Breathing deeply, which is one of the best - and fastest - ways to reduce the intensity of your anger.
— While breathing deeply, repeating a word or phrase that is calming to you, such as "relax," "let it go," or "take it easy."
— Immersing yourself in something you enjoy-perhaps reading, listening to music, gardening, or some other type of activity you find relaxing.
— Getting regular exercise and eating a healthful diet.
Something else to consider that brings on anger is a person having too high expectations of himself, that person will experience greater problems with anger, why? Measuring up to high standards will often lead to disappointment, and anger will quickly follow people that have a perfectionist mentality one should keep in mind a Bible proverb that helps us to see ourselves in the proper light. "there is not a righteous man, not even one... All men have deflected, all of them." (Romans 3:10, 12) Therefore, we set ourselves up for failure if we think that we or anyone else can be perfect.
One final thought on anger, some contend that venting is beneficial. Is it really? Consider how some experts view the venting of anger as being beneficial, recent psychological studies show that many people who allow themselves to express anger suffer from lower self-esteem, depression, guilt complex, escalated hostility, or anxiety. Moreover, "getting it off one's chest," or "blowing off steam," perhaps accompanied by angry outbursts, screaming, crying, or even physical assault, usually creates more problems than it solves. The angry person gets angrier, and hurt feelings build up in others.
Depression:At times we all must cope with feelings of sadness and on occasion we may fell we understand what depression is all about.
But clinical depression is a different matter, how does it feel to be clinical depressed? Some try to equate depression with a bout of the blues however clinical depression is a severe disorder that prevents a person from doing the basic daily routines. Severe depression cripples millions of people worldwide. Lots of people experience a blue mood from time to time but depression is a disorder that involves unrelenting gloominess. The depressed person loses interest in life, finds no pleasure in anything, and has feelings of general hopelessness and worthlessness. Notice how one person described how depression intruded into his life without warning. "Your life is suddenly darkened by a cloud of sadness for no apparent reason," explains Richard from South Africa. "Nobody you know has died, and nothing distressing has occurred. Yet, you feel dejected and listless. And nothing will make the cloud go away. You are overwhelmed by feelings of despair, and you don't know why." According to some experts another alarming symptom that manifests itself in people is when they are made to feel worthless by others.
Constant parading excessive and harsh criticism or abusive exploitation can cause worthlessness to be a constant state of mind. Feelings such as these can cause individuals to have negative feelings about themselves and this could lead to distrust of themselves and others as well, it is not uncommon that close relationships and friendships are unwittingly sabotaged, thus creating the very situation they fear most.
Some very helpful suggestions that may help anyone to deal with the feelings that they are experiencing, is to seek out an empathetic person, someone that you can confide in. It may be a trained counselor, your minister, a close relative, or a close friend, or your marriage mate. Depression can be defeated; it can be defeated by having a supportive helper available with whom to share the troubles that you are experiencing in life.
Those that are suffering from the bad effects of anger and depression should not feel that all is lost, one suggestion from a medical expert was to forget the things behind, if many of your emotional problems were rooted in the past, including being the victim of unjust treatment try to be willing to forget and forgive. No one is saying that forgetting is easy it may be very difficult to put those bad experiences behind you. But would you not agree that is better to forge ahead, than destroying the rest of your life by dwelling on what cannot be undone.
