Botox treatment has developed considerably in recent times. Many people opt to undergo the procedure because their favourite celebrity has done so, making it more of a fashion statement. Middle aged people who have developed lines, wrinkles and crow's feet as a result of ageing are generally seen as the demographic that commonly goes for botox treatment. Younger individuals are now looking for botox treatments though, and the reasons are intriguing. We will discuss this here.

We live in a society where appearance is everything, particularly in the younger age group. Many young individuals accept blindly the belief - portrayed by fashion magazines and celebrities - that looking young is a sign of keeping up with the times. As one gets older, a change in the appearance of the skin is a natural process and lines and wrinkles are bound to develop. Popular culture often takes a poor view of wrinkles and saggy skin, as we can see from the many products promoted to make one look younger.

One of the primary reasons why botox is chosen is because it provides safe and effective treatment of facial lines and wrinkles that is available to the general public at an affordable price. Improvements last a few months and can be seen almost immediately. Treatments can be targeted to specific areas of the face, making personalized treatments for patients possible. 'Baby' botox is also available now and as it only affects the treated areas, it is ideal for younger people who want their appearance changed very specifically.

As previously stated, appearances are everything in our society. Television, where male presenters are a lot older than their younger female counterparts, shows how the attitudes of society towards older women have changed significantly recently. Losing one's attraction is associated with getting older, and this belief makes young people look to botox treatments as a way of staying youthful.

It must be remembered that botox brings with it side effects albeit rare. Treatment does not prevent the development of wrinkles as one gets older, and it can in fact become addictive. As botox paralyses the muscles to get rid of expression lines, another potential problem with having botox too early is the side effect of muscle weakening and wasting. Not using these muscles for prolonged periods of time can result in the underlying facial bones becoming more prominent, resulting in the face looking a lot older as the person gets older.

Probably due to the expectations that society holds on external appearances being everything, botox is being used a lot more by younger individuals. Although it can improve the skin's overall appearance, botox might not necessarily be the best option for everyone. Of course, personal preference is always respected.
