The sleep -inducing plant

Valerian plant has been known since the Greeks and Romans made use of it as a remedy for digestive problems , menstrual cramps and some ailments of the urinary tract. While the plant has properties to attack these problems , are compounds with sedative effects on the body , controlling insomnia and anxiety , which have become popular to valerian .

Valerian is native to both Europe and western Asia but today can be cultivated in any region and any climate. Usually grows 60 cm tall and produces bunches of small flowers but very fragrant , sweet-scented , white , pink or purple.

The part used for medicinal purposes are the roots, which have to be very little smell fresh , but stale time off a very pungent and unpleasant odor. Its scientific name is Valeriana officinalis .

What is valerian ?
Valerian root has many properties that are beneficial to the human body but must be consumed with care ( see contraindications ) . Among the properties of valerian we can mention :


Valerian used to soothe aches and certain types of irregular menstrual cycles , cramping , fever and stomach ulcers
Valerian has properties that help to counter the flu and its symptoms
The Valeria has relaxing properties that help soothe headaches
These relaxing properties of valerian are also used to relieve anxiety
Valerian root is also used to induce sleep , which in most cases can be a nice effect , although some people can be intense .
